Lake Placid, NY - The New York Ski Educational Foundation XC Program hosted 17 athletes from around the state at the Olympic Training Center July 8-13 in Lake Placid. The week was to be a high volume week and a chance to continue working on technique.

Athletes had three focuses for the week:
1. preparation (for training and the upcoming winter)
2. focus while training
3. technique (improve efficiency)

All three of these areas were linked together through thinking while training — think about what you are doing and how you are using your muscles while skiing.
The first evening athletes were checked off for their first day of training on the “Are you ready?” board. Many of the kids had 1s, 2s, or 3s for day one, rather than the ideal 8 points per day. The board showed each athlete listed for each day of training and had areas such as on time for training, water bottle with a carrier, watch, snack, dry shirt and shoes, correct gear, recovery in between sessions and a coaches' surprise for the day. Each day was scored and totaled up for the week. By the end of week, all athletes were getting the max daily score on the board. Charlie Bencze (J2) was the grand champion and won a NYSEF hooded sweatshirt.

The week of training looked like this:
Tuesday PM - trail run, mobility and core circuits at Mt. Van Hoevenberg (1.5 hour)
Wednesday AM - classic easy distance with technique stations (2 hours)
Wednesday PM - skate easy distance with technique and video (2 hours)
Thursday AM - 20 mile double pole with 20 x 30 sec repeats (2 hours)
Thursday PM - soccer, agility and core (1 hour)
Friday - High Peaks hike including five 46er peaks of Lower Wolfjaw, Upper Wolfjaw, Armstrong, Gothics and Sawteeth (5 hours for the boys, 6 hours for the girls - the boys went the opposite direction of the girls and bet them back by 1 hour!)
Saturday AM - 17 mile distance ski, skate followed by classic (2 hours)
Saturday PM - off from training, trip to the summer ski jump competition and town
Sunday AM - skate time trial (1.25 hours)
Total for the week: 16.75 hours for the boys, 17.75 hours for the girls

Athletes finished up a great week of training with the famous Franklin Falls skate rollerski time trial — 7 km for the ladies and 9km for the men. It's a real tough course with the last half of the course climbing steep uphill. Everyone pushed through and finished the week off strong.

Special thanks to James Upham (USBA Development Coach), Zach Hall (USBA B Team), Sara Studebaker (USBA B Team) and Eric Carter (UVM Student-Athlete Intern) for providing group meetings on technique, nutrition and principles and adaptations of xc ski training.

Athletes attending: Dan Stevens (Scotia), Willie Bencze (Tupper Lake), Charlie Bencze (Tupper Lake), Wayne Clark (New Paltz), Judd Collier (Plattsburgh), Will Frielinghaus (Queensbury), Alex Goff (Lake Placid), Sam Phanuef (Old Forge), Sam Cowan (Lake Placid), Colin Delaney (Lake Placid), Alex Madden (Lake Placid), Elizabeth Izzo (Lake Placid), Carly Wynn (Queensbury), Amanda Moreland (Bloomfield), Kati Christoffel (Clifton Park), Mairead Fogarty (New Paltz), Heather Mooney (Keene Valley/Saxtons River, VT).

I’m stuck in Palma, at the Copa del Rey AUDI MAPFRE. Here’s the entire decision by the NY Appellate Division that gives Alinghi, at least provisional, victory.

If you are lazy to go through the entire text, here’s the juicy part:

Accordingly, the orders of the Supreme Court, New York County (Herman Cahn, J.), entered March 18, 2008 and May 13, 2008, which, inter alia, declared CNEV’s challenge invalid and GGYC the Challenger of Record under the Deed of Gift, should be reversed, on the law, with costs, CNEV declared the Challenger of Record, and, in keeping with the Deed of Gift’s requirement that the defender be given at least 10 months’ written notice to prepare for the challenge, the 10-month notice period should be tolled until service of a copy of this order. [Source: BMW Oracle] The Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) said today it will carefully consider the implications of todays ruling by the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court before deciding on its next step.

In a 3-2 decision, the Court ruled in favor of the Club Nutico Espaol de Vela (CNEV) as the challenger of record following a previous New York State Supreme Court decision last November that found CNEVs challenge was invalid.

We are surprised and disappointed by this ruling. We will now be taking legal advice and considering the next step, Tom Ehman, the clubs spokesman, said.

[Source: Alinghi] New York Supreme Court reinstates Club Nutico Espaol de Vela as the Challenger of Record

(New York, 29 July 2008) The Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court today ruled in favour of the Socit Nautique de Genve (SNG) declaring Club Nutico Espaol de Vela (CNEV) the rightful Challenger of Record for the 33rd Americas Cup and denying the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) this status.

Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi president, comments: We are delighted with this result; we can now continue with our vision of a multi-challenger event. The courts decision validates our actions and enables us to put the America’s Cup back on the water. Read the rest of this entry »

[Source: AUDI MedCup] Quantum Racing sit on the threshold of back-to-back regatta wins after a second and a first today on the Bay of Palma to go into Saturdays two final races of the 14th Breitling Regatta with a lead of 14 points.

Reeling off 2,2,1,1,2,1 finishes since Wednesday morning the American boat, the only new Botin Carkeek TP52 design this season, may now have a 30 points overall lead on the 2008 Audi MedCup Circuit standings, but skipper Terry Hutchinson (USA) again pledged that he and the Quantum Racing crew will be relentless in their pursuit of improvement and the overall Circuit title.

[Source: AUDI Medcup] Peter de Ridders team were on top of their game when they chased Bribn across the finish line of the first race before going on to win the second race by a comfortable margin, but once again it was their ability to rescue a solid single digit result from the depths of the fleet early in Race 6 of the regatta which also highlights their class in this fleet.

With the Embat sea breeze peaking at 13 knots Mean Machine (MON) won their 11th victory from 31 starts when Peter de Ridder (NED) got the best of a busy tussle at the committee boat end of the line, pulling away from Quantum Racing (USA) to tack early and gain the right hand side of the course.

The international Quebramar GP42 Cup is now passed its midpoint and the title is still far from clear and getting more open after each event. The 7 GP42 boats will now join the Mediterraneans most important regatta after an exciting event in Valencia where they once again demonstarted that anything could happen in this class. The Spanish will be the majority of the fleet with 4 yachts, Desafo, Canarias Puerto Calero, Caser-Quum and MADRID, followed by the two Italians AIRIS and Roma GP42.2 and the Swiss Near Miss.

So far the Quebramar GP42 Cup has seen 20 races sailed with 8 yachts in each event in three locations, Santa Margherita Ligure (Italy), Saint-Tropez (France) and Valencia (Spain). There is no better proof that it is a high-level, extremely close and professional circuit than the fact that there was a different winner in each event. In addition, the crushing majority of boats have won at least one of the 20 races and the podium of each event is always decided in the last day if not the last race. Read the rest of this entry »
